John Tyler, bike mechanic
John Tyler - Bike Mechanic

A little about myself...

After 31 years working at the Co-op refinery as an instrument mechanic, I retired. However, after my life slowed down I took notice to the amount of people biking around, and decided to become un-tired and start a bike shop. So I went to the Central Alberta Bicycle School in March of 2021, and became a certified bike mechanic. Being a 4th class power engineer and an instrumentation mechanic  in my past career meant that I felt right at home with my new business, and that’s how I hope you will feel too when you visit my shop.

When I’m not repairing bikes, you might catch me in a good book, teaching myself Spanish, or treating my wife and three kids to a new recipe I learned. And of course… when the Saskatchewan weather allows it, you might even see me on Regina’s bike trails.

How much is this going to cost?

It’s a question I hear often, and rightfully so! You want the best bang for your buck, and as a fellow customer, I empathize. We try to keep our costs as low as possible, and our value proposition as high as possible to make sure you are getting a fair deal.

If you want an estimate for the prices of my individual services, we have listed some of the most common services we do at our shop, however, over time we have found that not everything is as simple as putting a price to a service. Costs can compound and we’d like to take the time to give you a realistic idea for the cost of your repair. So, we included some scenarios to give you a better ballpark for how much your repair might cost.

Pricing Scenarios

Scenario 1 - The "Basic" Tune up

Customer comes in the door and says “John, I would like the basic tune up please.” This is a case we see every day. As we take a look at the bike we find that the bearings on the shaft where the wheel goes through need to be replaced… If not replaced, the customer will put 2 to 3 times more effort on pedaling the bike. So we call up the customer and tell them the news…

Predicted costs: $85 (Tune up) + $20 and up for bearing replacement + $20 for labour + $13.25 tax = $138.75

Scenario 2 - The BRAKES

Customer comes in the door and says “John, the brakes no longer work!” In order to get the brakes functioning again, we perform a service known as a “brake bleed.” However, as we did the bleed, we realized that the brake pads are beyond their minimum wear and they need to be replaced as well. Lets see how much this will cost…

Predicted costs: $35x2 (Brake Bleed) + $20-100 per wheel for brake pads+ $20-40 for labour + tax = $177.60 approximately
